Los Juanes

In February I was able record Juan Carlos Martinez and Juan Carlos Morales in Zihuatanejo. I packed my Korg digital recorder down to Mexico and recorded "the boys" at the Morales home in Zihua. We set up in the living room and in about 2 1/2 hours put down 13 tunes for a new CD. We only had one restart and one retake when I recorded over a song we'd just finished!

We used two mikes and two guitar pickup feeds into the D16 recorder. When I recorded Caballo Negro, an instrumental, I just used two mikes for an acoustic sound. We had a slight hum on on one pickup which I couldn't overcome but I wasn't able to hear it during mixdown. Next time I may try two guitar mikes along with the pickups. I can then "bounce" the two or use the best sounding track.

The Juan's are really "good people". They're friendly and easy to talk to, in Spanish! We had a little trouble communicating but a lot of the music and tech terms are similar. They really made me feel at home.

I really like their music. It has an international scope and their arrangements are unique. If you get to Ixtapa/Zihua try to find out where they're playing... and buy their CD!
